Omega 6 Fatty Acids
Food Source: Evening primrose oil, borage (or starflower) oil are
rich in Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) and vegetable oils provide Linoleic
Acid (- a precursor of GLA in the body. Function: GLA is an
essential fatty acid which is involved in the production of
prostaglandins which help regulate the menstrual cycle, blood pressure
and maintain skin health.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Food Source: Flesh of oily fish and cod liver oil are rich sources
of EPA and DHA (cod liver oil also provides vitamins A and D). Linseed
and rapeseed oil provide Alpha Linolenic Acid (a precursor of EPA and
DHA). Function: The essential fatty acids of the Omega 3 series
are required for the formation of prostaglandins involved in the
function of the cardiovascular system. Omega 3 fatty acids are
important in brain development and in the maintenance of healthy joints.
